Photo of Acela testing
Acela testing

Way back in the dark ages, even before Acelas had a name, some trainsets were testing weekdays between Boston and Kingston, R. I. Consider the 2004-2005 set. At the end of the day (and nearly 12 hours on duty), a trainman is walking toward the brand-new service and inspection building in Southampton Street Yard in Boston. The train is moving no faster than walking speed, because the trainman, Mike Brandon, is lining all the hand-operated switches. I'd say he was a tired and thirsty young man.
