Photo of Essex RR crosses Sutton Pond
Essex RR crosses Sutton Pond

The remains of the trestle over Sutton Pond in North Andover, Massachusetts.
The Essex Railroad was completed between N.Andover and Salem, MA in 1848. They used this trestle to span the small pond only feet from the terminus at the Jct of the Boston & Maine RR. Trackage rights brought them to Lawrence. This particular section was abandoned sometime in 1981. The other end of the line is still in use between Salem and Peabody and provides part of the connection for the few industries such as Eastman Gelatin in Peabody. The other part of the connection is the Old South Reading Branch which ran to Wakefield.
