Where Warbonnets Once Roamed

In the heyday of Santa Fe's "San Diegans", this train at the San Diego, Calif. depot might have been a sleek EMD E1 in the famous "Warbonnet" color scheme fronting a train of shiny Budd coaches.

Today, it's "Pacific Surfliner" F59HIs and bi-level cars, but the appeal is no less real; it is, perhaps, even more so, since Amtrak California operates significantly more trains along the Surf Line than roamed here even at the peak of ATSF service.

The depot also hosts "Coaster" regional rail trains and San Diego Trolley light rail.
