The NERAIL New England Railroad Photo Archive
Photo of ALTOONA, PA

Two SD-40 helpers pushing train up southern slope to Horseshow Curve. The ex PRR cabooses were heavy enough to be pushed from behind with high tractive effort units. (Don't know PC's limit on number of locomotive axles for pushing on Horseshoe Curve). Looks like the coal hoppers have their loads covered to help prevent freezing and also prevent coal dust from fouling track ballast.

Photographed by Bruce Nelson, January, 1970.

Railroad: Penn Central.
