A second view of the Midland Division bridge over the Quinebaug River at Putnam, CT. This postcard from my collection was unmailed, however the bridge is still double tracked making the view pre 1920. A hurricane and flood washed out this bridge in August 1955, it was never repaired. The details as told to me when I was a kid was the floods that came through Putnam piled debris up against the bridge until the water rose to the top of the bridge. The eastern most pier, at left in the photo, washed out taking out the two east end spans. In 1972 I stood at the brink of the west end of the bridge trying to imagine this space as a storm drain. The rest of the bridge is gone now. It has been replaced by a walkway through the center pier. The eastern abutment is still there, however the west abutment has been removed.
