Photo of Needham Jct, MA
Needham Jct, MA

This is a reposting to expand on John Barlow's observation of a Budd car attached to conventional coaches at Needham Jct. His observation is correct and what is going on is at the end of the day (maybe just Fridays) all the commuter rail equipment was gathered up in to one train and deadheaded into Boston. What we see here is an outbound RDC arriving and will continue on to Needham Heights. Deadhead back to the Jct and tack on to the rear of train shown on siding. Power on the "dead head" train has a SW1500 between two GP-9's. I'm guessing the SW1500 is the power off the weekday local that worked between Newton Upper Falls and Medfield Jct. Any clarification is welcome.

Thanks for this follow-up posting, Bruce. What an interesting collection of NH, PRR, and PC equipment! Question: assuming that there was no runaround siding at or near Needham Heights station, all locomotive pulled consists would have had to back about 2 miles down to the wye at Needham Jct before deadheading into Boston?
