Unlike the European cog system, Sylvester Marsh specifically designed his cog rail to be self-clearing. The rail was all on trestle-work and was open so the snow fell right through. Any action of the cog wheel dropped the snow through the cog rail to the ground below. So this cog was designed to operate in the winter without the need for any elaborate snow removal equipment
