Around the beginning of 1968 the New Haven retired the last of its Fairbanks-Morse H16-44s from the railroad's first order of the model (590-599, built in 1950) and gathered them at Cedar Hill Yard in New Haven. They would remain there until Penn Central sold them for scrap the following year.
