Amtrak F40 with Roadrailer awaits 449's Arrival at Springfield

Back in the late '90s, Amtrak made a push into the Mail & Express business and the Lake Shore Ltd consists carried both Mail Handling Cars and Roadrailers on the tail end. For 449, MHCs would originate at Boston, RRs would be added at Springfield, and then at Albany/Rensselaer, more MHCs/RRs would be added when 49 and 449 were combined resulting in in a pretty long train of 20+ cars. It's late on a winter afternoon at Springfield and the station switcher has brought a lone RR up from the USPO loading dock on the Conn River line to be added to 449, arriving shortly.
