Why all the railfans? The scene is at the former Palmer Union Station on a late winter afternoon sometime between June 1 of 1999 when CSX acquired its share of Conrail, and 2004, when the Steaming Tender restaurant opened displacing the flea market that used to to occupy the depot. My guess is this is the weekend of the annual Amherst Railway Society model RR show at W Springfield in late January that brings railfans out in droves (apparently it's always scheduled for the weekend before the Superbowl). The year might be 2000 when CSX operations in Massachusetts were new and still interesting. An ex-Con B23-7 appears to be leading conventional CSX GP40s west on the mainline about to cross the New England Central diamond.
