Some would describe the sound of an idling Alco with the word "chortle", it was a sort of gleeful sound, now that I think of it or maybe it was me, excited to see an Alco in service.

The sound an idling ALCO 244 made was a description of itself........"Bucket-o-bolts..bucket-o-bolts". I've heard it often enough to know.
