CSRX 216 by Base Station Road, Bretton Woods

This time of year, the Conway Scenic extends their "Mountaineer" excursion a few extra miles from Crawford Notch to Fabyan Station, across the road from Bretton Woods. Riders on Sunday's (9/19) train had about the best sight seeing conditions possible with bright sunshine, and hardly a cloud in the sky. The extension to Fabyan allows for perfect views of both the Mount Washington Grand Hotel, and Mount Washington itself. Today did not disappoint.

Here was CSRX 216 on the Fabyan runaround track looking towards the single span bridge over the Ammonoosuc River. The high short hooded, and great sounding, GP35, was enough power to pull six coaches back to North Conway.

CSRX 216 was built in March of 1965 for Norfolk & Western, and was sold to Guilford in March of 1993, where it became Springfield Terminal 216. In 2010, ST 216 and GP38 B&M (Originally MEC) 252 were traded to CSRX for the two FP9 "Sisters". 216 survives and thrives as the only remaining high short hooded GP35 or GP40 that was once owned by Guilford / Pan Am. Pan Am's high short hooded GP40s were all scrapped by the end of 2020.
