NA-1 501 @ Milepost NAU13 in Milford

Up until recently, south facing locomotives on the Northern Main & Hillsboro Branch were not common sights, yet here was the NA-1 Crew taking a south facing 501 and one empty covered hopped south on May 11, 2023.

The Wilton Yard limits extend from Milepost NAU13 to the end of CSX's portion of the Hillsboro Branch, just south of the Howard Street Crossing in Wilton (NAU16.4) at the border of the State Owned track where the Milford and Bennington operates. The state owned tracks continue north, intact, as far as a closed off rail bridge just south of Monadnock Paper in Bennington.

This is the south end of the Wilton Yard Limits. With both CSX and Milford Bennington operating within the Yard Limits in warmer weather, either RR would get permission to operate within the yard limits, though not at the same time.

The K44 represents 44 Miles to Keene, as these tracks once went that far. . Though west of Elmwood Jct in Hancock, the tracks were abandoned in the late 1930's according to "The Rail Lines of Northern New England" by Robert Lindsell. The other side of mile post reads N13.

501 sightings on the Nashua Subdivision (Northern Main) and Hillsboro Branch are not common

That beautiful milepost reminds us of the once dense rail network of New Hampshire.
