P&L 302 by "Maiden Lady Cove" in LaconiaThese days, P&L 302, sees hardly any use. It's stored serviceable at Meredith Station, ready to go, when the word is given.
This weekend the word was given! 302 powered "The Local", the Winni Scenic's Meredith to Lakeport trains as their regular engine had mechanical issues that have seen been repaired.
Last time the August 1950 built GP7 went out for a spin was a non revenue run in May of 2021 from Meredith to Lochmere and back to pick up the two "Marshmallows", a former MEC Observation car and a combine both covered with white tarps. Last time 302 was used in revenue service.. October of 2018. The moves were "push pull", so there was zero chance of seeing 302 lead the move going north. Two Budd RDC-1's, two Lackawanna MU Cars, and 1 CN caboose made up the consist.
P&L 302 was originally built for the Rock Island in August of 1950. The GP7 was sold to New England Southern in the 1980's, and sold to the Plymouth & Lincoln in the late 1990's. The P&L Shop Crew chopped the nose to it's appearance today.
Nice to see this "Old Girl" getting some work !
