Erie RR #7 Pacific Express at Elmira 1958Erie's #7 was one of three train pairs operating between Hoboken - Chicago in 1958. The prime trains on this route were #1 & #2, the Erie Limited, and #5 & #6 the Lake Cities. The Pacific Express and its eastbound counterpart, the Atlantic Express, handled a fair amount of mail departing their origins late at night. This edition of #7 has 5 head end cars including an RPO and 7 passenger cars including a Hoboken to Salamanca NY sleeper and a Binghamton NY to Marion OH diner. All that's left in Elmira today is Norfolk Southern's single track Southern Tier secondary mainline. Photo was taken by my father (I'm the waif hanging out of the fireman's window).
