An abandoned keystone arch bridge looms above the west branch of the Westfield River between Becket and Middlefield, Mass. Several of these stone bridges were constructed by Irish and Scottish immigrants of the Western RR Co. circa 1840 for the long-awaited Boston-to-Albany route. Major George Washington Whistler, father of the famous artist, helped design and build the road. Three or four of the stone bridges were abandoned around 1913 when the NYCRR relocated a portion of the original railroad in the mountain gorge. A hiking trail now passes over the bridges.
