Photo of DeWitt Geep at Manchester
DeWitt Geep at Manchester

In the early 1970s, Penn Central's DeWitt Shops re-engined 35 Alco RS-3s with EMD engines salvaged from scrapped E-units. Dubbed DeWitt Geps, these RS-3ms were a common sight on branchline trains in the Northeast. PC 9972, a former PRR unit, was working for Conrail when it switched at Manchester, CT, in August 1976.

Wow Tom! I was 14 and was quite possibly there the day you took this pic. Such memories for me. Thank you for finding this! Too bad the flagman and engineer arent visible. The flagger is likely Aldo Scotta who took me and and taught me so much. I recognize that tanned arm and body shape. The engineer was likely Art Healy who seemed to not be not too fond of me overall but still let me ride with them a lot. I was usually at the co-op for the morning and afternoon switch moves. They ran like clockwork back then. Great picture! If you have anything more from Manchester I would love to see them... Thanks again!
