This 1888 Maine Central Railroad "trip pass" was issued for travel on MEC company business from Portland to Belfast. The final 33 miles of this trip (Burnham Junction to Belfast) would have been made over the MEC's Belfast Branch, a line the company had leased from the B&MLRR since it was completed in 1871. In June, 1925, however, the MEC unexpectedly terminated its lease, effective December 31st, citing excessive losses. The road thus reverted to the B&MLRR and began operation under its own name for the first time since it had been completed 54 years earlier.
