Spring Cleaning

This photo shows a downtown section of the Newport Secondary track after a spring cleaning effort by Old Colony & Newport volunteers.

The walls are the remains of the Walnut Street trolley bridge which used to run from the center of Newport to the Naval Training Station. The trolleys started running on July 1st, 1904 and stopped running August 23rd, 1926.

The tracks carried traffic to Fall River and onto Boston. In 1913, there were 12 roundtrip passenger trains between Fall River and Newport some of which went through to Boston.
