Van Zandt Avenue Bridge

The Old Colony & Newport Railway passes under two bridges as it leaves downtown Newport. The closer one in the photo is the Van Zandt Avenue bridge which is basically made of granite blocks and reinforced concrete.

The bridge in the distance is the East Bound ramp of the Newport Pell Bridge.

There is an active Rhode Island Bridge and Turnpike Authority funded study which is considering the relocation of the bridge access ramps.

One of the items under consideration is to replace one of the tracks into Newport with a limited access road and bike path.

This would require replacement of the Van Zandt Avenue bridge.
