Pan Am Railways EDMO with SD26 number 621 overtakes AYMO (who is waiting to be recrewed) at Buckland, MA at 2:35 pm on 05/10/2008. This was not a good day for Pan Am. Besides the fact that one of their hottest trains is sitting without a crew, EDMO was having problems of its own. The second unit (GP35 number 207) failed upon leaving East Deerfield. That left only three on-line units to drag the 120-plus car train up the hill to Shelburne Falls, MA. The train took over two hours to cover the 15 miles from East Deerfield to Shelburne Falls and will require another hour-and-a-half to cover the next 15 miles to Hoosac Tunnel. The excessive length of this train hints that it was either combined with today’s EDRJ or the previous day’s EDMO. Combining trains (or simply annulling them) is becoming a daily necessity on Pan Am, due to a lack of crews and dependable power.
