Laying out the Switch

The Newport Secondary track is being upgraded with a RIDOT based grant. Part of the project is the reconfiguration of a switch in the area of the Navy Piers.

This photo shows the switch being prebuilt on top of an existing track. It will be lifted by machinery and place onto the other track. From there the entire assembly will be slid down the track and set into place.

This enhancement will become a passing siding. The track is used by the Newport Dinner Train, The Island Touring Train, and the Old Colony and Newport Railway.

The work is being done by John Ogren and his crew from Northern Rail Services of Old Saybrook, Ct.
