White Mountain Central

Porter #1 on the White Mountain Central in Lincoln. This steamer used to switch the Koppers tie plant at the end of my street in Nashua. It was nice to finally see it.

Visitor Comments about this Photo:

This is the EXACT consist of the first season on the WNC, although the Porter is 100% prettier after a trip to the WMC shops. Built in 1930, it was used to load cars of railroad ties into the retorts at the Koppers Tie plant 2 miles north of Nashua, NH. By 1952 it was out of service, sitting within view of the B&M main line. It was then a full length saddletank with heavy castings fore-and aft for traction and as buffers for the creosote-covered tie cars. The push-pole and unsprung 4 wheel forestry car are unmodified from the original 1958 consist. This was my little engine during July and August of 1958.
