Boston to Cape Cod via Taunton (Summer 1961)

A fire destroyed a bridge near Quincy (MA), severing direct service between Boston and Cape Cod, the latter being a favorite vacation spot for many Bostonians.
Eager to retain summer servie to the Cape, the New Haven initiated a round-about route in the summer of 1961 that used the Stoughton branch. Trains passed through Stoughton and Taunton before joining the Cape line near Middleboro.
This photo shows a Cape-bound train heading away from the camera at Whittenton Junction just north of Taunton.

Photographed by Tom O'Toole.
