We are looking south at the long abandoned west end of the Southbound Receiving Yard at Cedar Hill in North Haven, CT. Lying amongst the trees are the five tracks of the Southbound Receiving Yard. In its day, this yard could hold 100 cars. This yard fed the Westbound Hump and ultimately the Westbound Classification Yard. From here, classified cars would be prepared for departure in consists destined for Maybrook, NY. The Westbound Hump was officially closed in the 1950's. It was briefly reopened again in 1960 - only to be closed again, this time for good, by the Penn Central soon after they took control of the NYNHHRR. Overall, the Cedar Hill facility could hold 15,000 railcars, covered 880 acres and had 154 miles of track.
