An Original 80 BIG MAC in Bow

There has been some variety on the incoming loaded coal trains to Bow, and the NHB-15 power lineup did not disappoint.

NS 7228 was the original SD80MAC demonstrator model for EMD built in July 1995 as EMDX 8000. It was then sold to Conrail as #4602, then to CSX as first as 812 then 4128, and traded with CSX's other eleven 80MACs to Norfolk Southern. Only 30 of these were built, and NS has all 29 of them, since CSX scrapped one.

What made the SD80MAC big? It's over 80 feet in length, 5000hp, with a 20 cylinder version of the 710 engine. It is noticeably longer than the two GE Dash 9's and the SD70ACe that were also in the lineup.. The 80MAC has a very nice sound to it for a 21 year old powerhouse.

NHB-15 engine lineup, all NS #9669n, #9843n, #7228n, and #1101s.
