The EL vists Gardner

PB-100 and companion PB-99 were fast piggyback trains running between Chicago and Boston via the Erie Lackawanna, Delaware & Hudson, and Boston & Maine, using pooled diesels from all three roads. On its last leg into the B&M's East Cambridge piggyback terminal, eastbound PB-100 rolled past Gardner tower behind EL SD45s.

Visitor Comments about this Photo:

Awesome photo of a pre-cursor to today's 22K intermodal train. Current 22K cutoff to availability schedule is around 68 hours. PB-100 was scheduled to run the EL from Chicago to Binghamton in 22 hours. I'm guessing the D&H / B&M portion of the trip to Boston would have been 12-16 hours? Add a few hours for loading and unloading pigs and Chicago cutoff to Boston availability would have been 42+/- hours, or more than a whole day less of transit time than today's 22K!
