Those who know South Station only as the busy, bright place it is today missed the days in the late 60s/early 70s when tracks were being removed, the building was being chopped away piece by piece, and total demolition was a real possibility. Empty platforms stood where Boston & Albany trains once departed from the lower numbered tracks. There was no hint at the time that there was a revival in South Station's future.
