RS3 on the Needham branch

For a while in 1971-72, Penn Central assigned a couple former New York Central passenger RS3s to the Needham branch rush hour trains that used standard equipment rather than Budds. On a summer evening, ex-NYC 5527 has turned its train on the wye at Needham Junction and will become part of the nightly deadhead equipment move back to South Station.

Photographed by Tom Nelligan, August, 1971.
