Independence Day

On February 3, 1973, the Providence & Worcester RR resumed independent operation after 84 years as a leased property of the New Haven and Penn Central. A morning ceremony at Woonsocket marked the transition. Freshly painted RS3 161, one of five leased from the Delaware & Hudson as startup power, pulled slowly into Woonsocket yard to greet the opening day crowd of employees, politicians, locals, and railfans that was celebrating the occasion.

Visitor Comments about this Photo:

I remember my Yale schoolmate Gordon Fay, who spearheaded this return to independent operation, telling about stealing the march on the Penn Central. The big roads thought no one could simply "take over". Some of the leased equipment was actually on the roster of the big roads!
