When the historic 1838 Eastern Route station in Salem was demolished in 1959 as part of a crossing elimination project, this spartan facility at the south portal of the new tunnel replaced it and lasted for more than thirty years until the present station north of the tunnel was built. A solo Budd typical of Eastern Route off-peak trains of the early 1970s stopped there on an inbound run in August 1971.
