ghost at Dover Street

Like a ghost from the past, the last survivor of the New Haven's first fleet of road diesels somehow survived in the scrap line at Dover Street Yard in Boston until it was finally cut up by Penn Central. NH 0716 was one of 60 Alco DL-109s delivered in 1941-45. In 1957 it was converted to a electrical power plant (the "PP" on the nose), painted red, and used to test the third rail gear on the dual power locomotives of the experimental lightweight trains that the NH was acquiring at the time. That new assignment allowed it to endure while the other DL-109s were retired in the late 1950s. It's seen here at Dover Street in the company of a FL9.
