Back when it was common for kids to hang around railroad stations to watch the action, local boys supervise the crew of New Haven local freight NX-18 as they switch at Milldale, CT, on the Canal Line. This branch is now a rail trail but the station survives as a museum.

Great shot! I lived across the street from the NYC Valley Branch station in North Warren, PA. Loved watching locals and through trains there.

However, one thing in this shot I doubt anyone misses — foot boards, the bane of the switchman ('s feet and legs)!
