The cogwheel gear profile is one that is not in common use today. At the time it was thought to approximate the kinematic sinewave motion of the gear in the cog more accurately

Also, the construction of the cog rail designed by Sylvester Marsh was particularly adapted to running in the winter in snow. being of a self-clearing nature as opposed to the European cog system
