F40 debut

Amtrak's first group of F40PHs went into service in April 1976, pulling Amfeet equipment delivered the year before. Here four-month-old Amtrak 202 raced east through Stonington, CT, in its first summer on the road. This shot was taken from the back yard of the late Jim Bradley, whose collection of preserved New Haven passenger cars was long a landmark along the Shore Line.

Photographed by Tom Nelligan, August, 1976.
