As seen from the Summer Street bridge, a New Haven Alco S-1 switches past the yard tower at the railroad's Boston freight terminal as two more wait in the background. Not a trace remains today of the NH's several large yards and associated freight houses and team tracks that stretched along the South Boston waterfront from the Fan Pier to beyond Commonwealth Pier (now the Boston World Trade Center). Once freight dried up and Penn Central concentrated operations at Beacon Park and Readville, it was this land that ultimately made the "Seaport District" development possible.
