eastbound coal

A pair of Penn Central GP40s sandwich a B&M GP18 and GP9 on the point of a loaded Bow coal train eastbound at Ayer, MA. It was unusual to see only four units on heavy loaded coal trains in the early 1970s; usually they ran with five or six.

Photographed by Tom Nelligan, August, 1971.
