The MBTA's first five F40s arrived before there were any HEP-compatible cars for them to pull, so during their first few months in late 1978/early 1979 assistance was needed to provide train heat steam. That's what E8 4264 behind shiny new F40 1004 was doing as they rolled across the Route 128 ramp bridge on the Weston/Newton line with an inbound Framingham train.
