Stoughton deadhead

Having delivered its crowd of rush hour MBTA riders, an evening commuter train that is now deadheading back to Boston pulls off the Stoughton Branch track onto the mainline at Canton Jct. behind a GP9/E8 duo. Before the push-pull era, the power ran around the cars at Stoughton to reverse direction.

Great photo and great info!

Any idea how they handled reversing when running with only a cab unit? I've seen several pictures of a single E8 or FP10 with Pullman cars, but I can't imagine they would've run a cab unit backwards leading the train on the return trip.
