clearance work

During 1979, the MBTA embarked on a project to improve clearances on the Boston & Maine's New Hampshire route so that piggyback traffic and other large-dimension cars could depart Boston via Lowell, and so that the B&M's Hill Crossing freight line across Somerville could be shut down and used as a right-of-way for the Red Line extension between Davis Square and Alewife. Track-lowering work was in progress as this GP7/RDC set comprising a Lowell train sped through the north side of Somerville on a temporarily single-track line.
