By 1978, Northup Avenue Yard in Providence was a largely empty place, its days as a busy hump yard for the New Haven long gone as freight traffic dried up. Amtrak train 172, the Washington-Boston Patriot, sped past vacant tracks with the usual F40/Amfleet consist.
