The Merchants Limited was the New Haven's premier train between Boston and New York, departing South Station and Grand Central Terminal at 5 PM to accommodate businessmen after a day's work. It maintained some distinction into the Penn Central years, carrying parlor cars, a full diner, and this illuminated tailsign seen glowing in the darkness at Back Bay Station.

Photographed by Tom Nelligan, May, 1970.
