Gone from modern winter passenger train scenes is the steam. As a holdover from steam locomotives, conventional passenger cars required steam for heating. Non-steam locomotives had to have a small steam boiler just for heat. Terminals like South Station shown here needed to provide steam connections.to keep cars warm when road engines were not coupled to them. The vapor always added interest to even ordinary pictures such as this one.
