Old Center Entrance Car

Service Car 6131 whiling away some of its its last MBTA years at Watertown Yard.
According to Tom Nelligan ".........This ancient machine was a standard Boston Elevated Railway center entrance trolley that had been converted to a sand car in the 1950s. It would patrol the street-running Watertown line in icy weather to lay down grit, often making an early morning trip before the startup of regular service...".
Fortunately it has been preserved by Seashore Trolley Museum.

Photographed by Ron DeFilippo, September, 1969.
Added to the photo archive by Ron DeFilippo, April 2, 2019.

This ancient machine was a standard Boston Elevated Railway center entrance trolley that had been converted to a sand car in the 1950s. It would patrol the street-running Watertown line in icy weather to lay down grit, often making an early morning trip before the startup of regular service.. Naturally the one time I saw it out on the line I didn't have a camera with me.
