PTM 1004 (HH600) was already pushing 30 years of age when I found it in classic B&M black, red, and white switcher paint switching in the small yard that once existed west of the end of the street trackage along Commercial St. in Portland, ME. By August of 1968 it was wearing Portland Terminal newer scheme with a yellow nose with a black (or very dark green) 'V' near the top of the nose, dropping to a little below the headlight. Built in 1938, the 1004 lasted until at least 1971. 33 years would be an unusually long life for a modern diesel; for a locomotive built so early in the diesel age, the 1004 (and its PTM HH600 brethren) had truly notable careers.
