Evening rush at Bird's Hill Station.

Single 0700s had been a staple of Needham Branch coach train schedules since the end of steam. Because Needham Heights was essentially a dead end, there had always been a lot of coach train back up moves, both scheduled and dead head, between there and Needham Junction. Though road switchers were also used, the 0700s fit the existing pattern well. As a fourteen-year-old I vastly preferred the sight, sound and acceleration of the comparatively new, but scarce.GP-9s. I preferred not to use up film on the more common, but tired looking and sounding 0700s. What I did not realize, until many years later was, that Old Colony service had been days from ending. The resulting change in commuter service on July 1st would allow New Haven to retire its few remaining 0700s.

Wow
Just magnificent
Your black & white photos taken as a teenager are better than all our grownups color photos

Engines that served side by side with steam in the 40s , their remaining service days limited to commuter and branch line service and the black and white imagery combine to make a haunting view of the fading New Haven. Thanks for being there trackside with your old film burner and sharing these photos and narration with us.
