About the Photo Archive, and NERAIL

NERAIL is an Internet mailing list run by Gil Emery Jr., devoted to the discussion of New England Railroads. With several hundred subscribers currently, just about anything related to railroading in New England can and does come up, from near real-time train location reports, to historical discussions, to colorful arguments about what's being served for dinner tonight on Amtrak's train #448 out of Boston [editor's note: for all practical purposes, nothing, at least not when I rode it. First class my fanny. Grrr.] ;-)

NERAIL has its own web site, and visiting it is probably the easiest way to learn about NERAIL, or to find out how to subscribe yourself. Just follow the link below:

A searchable archive of the NERAIL mailing list is also available at the following location:

Many NERAIL list members are also railroad photographers, and they needed a convenient, simple way of sharing photos with other NERAIL list members. The NERAIL Photo Archive was created by Jeff Morris to fill that need, and went live in very late 1997. The first photograph was posted by Joe Czapiga on January 5, 1998.

Since then, the NERAIL Photo Archive has grown tremendously, and now contains well over ten thousand photographs. In April of 2003, the NERAIL Photo Archive was split in to two separate sites. The NERAIL North American Photo Archive contains photographs from all over North America, including New England, while the NERAIL New England Photo Archive remains dedicated exclusively to photos of railroading in and around New England. Many different road names and equipment types are represented in both sites, with most photographs dating from the last few decades.

Thanks to the generous participation of NERAIL list members and other railroad fans, the NERAIL Photo Archive has been a tremendous success!
