Photo of Flanger in Merrimack, NH
Flanger in Merrimack, NH

At first I thought this was a caboose. Scotty on NERAIL corrected me and told me it was a Flanger. (Thanks, Scotty). I have no history on this flanger. It sits on a segment of rail in Merrimack, NH on South River Road (Rt. 3). The rail is not connected to any current railroad. I doubt it ever was. The flanger apparently is/was used as a business office. That's the back of a sign on the roof. The front of the sign is blank. As you can see, it's for sale. (This is not meant to be a commercial post.) If you have any info on the history, e-mail me at magnadan@attbi.com and I'll update the description.

**** I got this update *****

Hello Dan,
I believe you will find that your caboose that
you found in merrimack is not a caboose but a Flanger.
Made of wood between 1914-1920. The part used to
remove the snow (the flange gear itself) has been
removed from the middle. It also has the metal
protection for the operator over the left rear window
of your photo. Chances are fair to good that this is a
former B&M or Maine Central Flanger.

Hope this is of some use.
Scotty
