Photo of Super Dome by the Schuylkill
Super Dome by the Schuylkill

Port Clinton, Pa., where the Schuylkill River slices through Blue Mountain northwest of Reading, is an unlikely place to find a full-length dome car more accustomed to wide open spaces out west.

Here's former Milwaukee Road lounge #55, now Reading & Northern #4, awaiting its next call to duty with the R&N business car fleet. It's one of 11 Pullman-Standard cars built for the "Hiawatha" fleet in the early 1950s.

It and its sisters have also served on CN, VIA Rail Canada, Amtrak, and Ontario Northland; they have also operated on excursion and dinner trains in Alaska, California, Colorado, Minnesota, and Washington State.
