Photo of Wolfeboro Falls, NH
Wolfeboro Falls, NH

Looking south at the side track (on left) has an empty box that will be loaded with excelsior (wood shavings). The Mill was still water powered at this time. Even had a narrow gauge railroad that transported the logs from the wood yard across the river to the mill.

Visitor Comments about this Photo:

Excelsior was used before plastic foam. In fact, some of the plastic packing material was called "popcorn" after the actual popcorn that it replaced. I personally sold a number of truckloads of peeled poplar out of Quincy, NH to this very mill in 1955 or 1956.
